| She ends up volunteering and teaching that entire summer. These people are amazing, she discovers. She has never seen anyone willing to try so hard or a group that never says, "I can't." | Bon je me dévoue, et je finis par enseigner tout l'été ! Ces gens sont étonnants! | The following summer Special Olympics steps in and offers a summer job to the boarder, using her own horses to run a riding program for many of the riders that had participated before. She is hesitant, it would be difficult to do with only two horses but for the sake of the riders she is willing to give it her best shot. | L'été suivant les Special Olympics m'offrent un emploi temporaire et j'utilise mes deux chevaux pour un programmes équestre au profit des handicappés mentaux, nombres des cavalier du centre précédent me rejoigne, mais c'est difficle avec seulement deux chevaux de contenter tout le monde... |
| But she is troubled. The program is appreciated by the riders, but with only two horses it is extremely limited. And she keeps getting calls from riders from the year before who also want to come and ride. One in particular gets to her - a young woman who is severely affected by cerebral palsy and uses her feet for hands to use on the reins. | Je suis troublée, je n'ai que mes deux chevaux et tout le monde veut participer quelque soit son handicap. mais seuls les handicap mentaux lourds sont aceptés par les Specials Olympics. | But she is not allowed to come and participate as Special Olympics is the sponsoring agent of the riding program and they only deal with the mentally disabled not the physically disabled. | January of the following year, she is sitting enjoying coffee on one
cold winter day with two friends. She starts to complain about the unfairness
of it all.
Everyone and anyone should be allowed to participate regardless of their disability. One friend agreeing suggests that maybe something could be done and maybe together they could get something started. |

| That year was spent learning and researching therapeutic riding and learning the aspects of starting a new organization. Monthly meetings were organized with many university students contributing of their time and energy. But we were organizing, not yet providing any riding for the disabled | Tout l'année ne sera pas de trop pour effectuer des recherches sur les programmes de thérapie avec le cheval et la consistution d'une association. | The following year, in January 1985, we were incorporated as a non-profit corporation. We applied for funding, found a home for a summer program at the Pavilion at the Exhibition Grounds free of charge for the 4 months. That first week of May we felt pretty lost. We had a home, but no students, no horses, no equipment and no money. We did have an office full of paper, and a strong corp of volunteers from the university, and funding for three university students to work full-time on the summer program. | En janvier 1985, l'association se constitue en association sans but lucratif etintroduit ses premières demandes de suvbsides, trouve un lieu d'activité dans un pavillon des halls des foires qui leur est mis gratieusement à disposition pour 4 mois. | Things just fell into place after that first week, first one person and then another came forward, one offering a couple of old helmets, another a pony called Red, a volunteer brought us a three year old palomino gelding called Bandit and a thirty five year old mare named Molly, and from there we took off. | Toutt ce met en place très rapidement, les bonnes volontés pallie les manques les uns après les autres, nous recevons, des bombes, de l'équipement puis un poney appelé RED et ensuite une jument de 35 ans appellée MOLLY et nous commençons |
| We did a lot of long term planning or you can even call it dreaming of where we wanted to be in the future. One of our most fervent wishes was to begin a year round program. | By the end of the summer we had seven horses in our program, two that we had bought off the standardbred racetrack, KimJay and Troy. Another standardbred, Billy Barker who at one point was the top money earner in Western Canada was donated to our program. | A la fin de l'été notre écurie compte sept chevaux, deux qui ont les courses pour nous rejoindre KIM JAY and TROY, BILLY BARKER un des meilleurs gagneurs en son temps à l'ouest du Canada nous est offert.. |
| We needed a home for the horses and we needed a home for the riding program. Again we had no funding, we did not know what we were going to do. Unfortunately, in the fall the pony club needed the arena on evenings and weekends and only weekday mornings were available for our students. Several of our volunteers agreed to continue to work full time without any remuneration at least for awhile so we moved on to "greener pastures." | Nous avons absolument besoin d'un toit pour nos chevaux et d'une piste permanente pour le programme. | In September of 1985 we were one of the first boarders at Greenfield Stables. We had a one room office and 7 horses. The stabling cost was $50.00 per horse, but we had to supply all the feed, bedding and do all the chores. To go from $0 to $350 per month, plus feed costs was extremely difficult, if not impossible for us alone. | Nous nous installons parmi les occupants de Greenfield Stables. Nous avons un local de travail, sept boxes et une ardoisse salée... Nos dépenses s'alourdissent de 50$ par cheval chaque mois, et 350$ ne se trouvant sous le sabot des chevaux, non comptabilisé les frais de nourriture et annexe c'est dur mais pas impossible |
| Without the volunteers who came out each and every day, we never would have made it. It also helped that we had a winter works program and we had the ability to hire two extra people to help with the chores for a few months. Especially since one of the chores we had to do was to go bag sawdust from a woodworking mill everyday, enough wood chips to bed seven horses. This was one of the many ways we were trying to keep our costs down. We remained there until the summer of 1986. | Sans les bénévoles jamais nous n'aurions tenu. Qu'ils

| That year we moved temporarily to Touchwood Stables, 10 miles west on the Biggar Highway. They had 4 huge barns with room for 40 or 50 horses in each. It was built as a training school. We had one barn and office space and, again, increased costs. We had no indoor arena, but had a summer program. | Nous avons ensuite eménagé au Touchwood Stables, 10 miles

| That was truly an eventful fall for us. The Kinsmen Foundation came through with a grant of $7000 to purchase riding equipment for the association. Dennis Ejack owned a tack store in town and agreed to waive any mark-up and on top of that he made a point of contacting each and every one of his suppliers and getting them to donate at cost the riding equipment that we required. | Pas de piste couverte non plus, donc sans possibilté de faire un programme hivernal mais nous avons reçu l'aide inespérée de la Foundation Kinsmen qui nous a accordé une bourse de $7000 pour l'achat de matériel équestre. Dennis Ejack possedait un magasin en ville et a décidé de passer l'éponge en plus il a contacté chacun de ses fournisseur et a obtenu leur collaboration |
| Dennis made sure that we were getting top quality equipment at bargain basement prices. We bought western saddles, english saddles, children's saddles, saddle pads, bridles, brushes, hoof picks, bandages. It was like letting a kid loose in a candy store. | Dennis s'est arrangé pour qu'en plus nous recevions la meilleure qualité et que chacun de nos achats soit assorti d'un don de valeur équivalente du fournisseur. C'était comme irréel! nous avons eu la meilleure qualité en selles, bridons, bandes,etc un vrai noel ! |
| Next we moved to the Flying Appaloosa Ranch, 14 miles west on the Biggar Highway, and rented 40 acres of pasture. We thought we had found the place of our dreams. There we had a barn, a huge spectators' area, an overhead viewing area, a wash rack, and an office. We cut trails into the 10 acres of woods in the pasture. There were trails, gullies, valleys and hills, and deer visited the land. We worked for 2 years on an application for purchasing the property on a lease-to-own; however, it was sold suddenly to a German consortium. That was the summer of 1987 and one of our special horses, Molly, died. Plans had been made for a purchase and applications for grants had been filled out. A one year feasibility study had been done that we couldn't use, and we again had to go look for a new home. | Nous pensions avoir trouvé notre lieu d'établissement

de pastures et surtout avions à notre entière disposition

Il y avait sur le domaine des petites collines, des vallées et des cervidés qui venaient nous rendre visite... Nous avons faits des études pour obtenir des prêts hyppothécaires quand oudain le domaine fut vendu ) un groupe allemand. Notre Molly est décédée. C'est le coeur gtros que nous sommes reparti en quête d'un lieux pour nous nos cavaliers et nos chevaux. |
| Finally,
We own our home : a place for Saskatoon Horses and the Handicapped.
For a long time we were looking for a property. The land we are presently on was available for lease with the option to assume the existing mortgage. We borrowed funds, did another feasibility study and applied for more grants. The Kinsmen Foundation came to our assistance and helped us with the down payment., and we were able to assume the existing mortgage. |

Nous avons longtemps cherché un lieu pour nous installer. Notre centre actuel était sur le marché immobilier mais son achat nécissitait des fonds importants, après études, et mûre réflexion, grâce aussi à la Fondation Kinsmen (qui nous avait déjà aidé pour le matériel équestre) nous avons pu consitituer les arrhes et conclure un prêt hypothécaire que nous savons parfaitement assumer. |
| It made so much sense for us to own our own property It gave us security, we now could apply for funding and donations to improve the property and make it handicapped accessible. | C'est une énorme différence pour nous que d'être enfin propriétaires de nos installations, nous pouvons enfin demander des subsides pour adapter les lieux à nos cavaliers. |
| Each time we moved there was a major amount of stress (financially and otherwise – moving costs and time and energy) on our organisation. Our costs doubled and tripled without the income to bear it. During those times of moving, the program wasn't running, so we have always been under financial stress. | Ne plus jamais connaître le stress des déménagements ! Les moyens engagés (financiers, humains, et l'énergie) qui triplent facilement dans ces cas ne sont pas compensés par des rentrées et de plus contraigentn un arrêt des nos activités équestres. |
| It is amazing how, from that point on, we have grown and have made many improvements on the property, since then -from fencing to finally being able to provide heat in our stable area. | C'est merveilleux les progrès que nous accomplissons depuis, dans tous les domaines, des clôtures au projet chauffage de nos écuries et piste couverte (Hearth project still going on). |
