| Two minutes into a conversation with 17-year-old Erin of Dexter, Michigan, it's apparent that she is very much a typical teenager. She may not even know how inspiring her story is. The fact that Erin was born without legs and with only one arm hasn't slowed her down at all. | Erin met Nancy Rich in seventh grade, and they quickly became soul
mates. "I'd go over to Nancy's house – she had a purebred Arabian gelding.
Raftep (Sahara Sotep x Lavada), and a pony – we'd groom the horses, and
I'd watch Nancy ride," Erin remembers. "'Raffi,' the gelding, was incredibly
sweet and gentle and I had always wanted to ride. Nancy's dad, Lynn Rich,
decided that I could ride him (and he'd gotten the okay from my parents),
so we rigged up a western saddle using an extra cinch to hold me. I got
up and just walked with Mr. Rich or Nancy at the lead. I trusted Nancy
and her dad, and eventually when they told me I was ready to trot, they
longed me while I held on to the saddle. Gradually I got braver and braver
and let go of the saddle and held the reins for a few minutes at a time.
"When I told my parents that I wanted to ride and show they were really supportive. My parents have always taught me that I could do anything I wanted to – maybe not like everyone else, but I could do it." And that go-for-it attitude seems to have made all the difference in Erin's life. There isn't anything she couldn't do, or at least try. According to her mom, "She's determined and resourceful – always able to find a way to do things. She's a sharp young woman, and even though the riding still scares me, it's been great for her – has broadened her horizons and she's made friends from all over the country through her involvement with the horses" |
Erin s'est liée d'amitié avec Nancy Rich une condisciple
d'école dont la famille possédait des chevaux, un hongre
pur sang arabe et un poney. "j'aidais Nancy au pansage puis je l'observais
monter avec envie" se souvient Erin. "Raffi (le hongre) était
très calme et gentil et je mourrais d'envie de le monter"
Après en avoir discuté avec mes parents Lynn le père
de Nancy a sellé Raffi avec une selle Western, a ajouté une
poignée pour que je puisse me tenir et m'a hissé en selle
! Au début c'était au pas, le cheval tenu par Nancy ou Lynn.
Après quelques temps ils m'ont longée, je gagnais en confiance
graduellement, puis ce furent les premières foulées de trot,
plus tard j'osai lâcher la poignée et tenir les rênes...
Quand j'ai annoncé à mes parents que je souhaitais monter "pour de vrai" il ont été très sportifs et m'ont encouragé. Ils ne cessent de m'enseigner que si je veux faire quelque chose je le peux, peut être pas comme tout le monde, mais que cela ne doit pas m'arrêter d'essayer au moins. C'est cette attitude volontaire qui fait la différence, il n'y a rien de défendu, si ce n'est de ne pas essayer. Selon sa mère "Erin est très déterminée et inventive. C'est une jeune femme très déterminée, et bien que l'équitation me fasse toujours un peu peur, ce dois reconnaître que ce fut bénéfique pour Erin. Cela a ouvert son horizon et lui a permis de conclure des amitiés au travers de ses activités avec les chevaux partout où elle passe". |
| Erin and her parents took things one step at a time when she began her involvement with horses. "I can ride these arab horses because they're smart enough to know who's up on their back. And when you start to become a better rider the horses throw more at you, and that's what helps you become an even better rider." | Erin et ses parents ont progressé patiemment permettant une consolidation de ses acquis avec le cheval. | Before long Erin was in the showring on her own Arabian mare, SW Letitia
(Skothaf x Le Lesa).
'Leti' was actually the first horse we looked at when we set out to lease a horse," says Erin. "She wasn't completely voice-trained, but her owners thought it would be fairly easy to get her there. |

| Erin can do everything involved in tacking up her horses, from start to finish, all by herself. She gets the horses from the field, puts them in cross ties while she grooms and saddles them, and then she uses a mounting block designed and built by her dad to mount and dismount by herself. The mounting block leads up to a platform that is about saddle height. "It took some time for Leti to get used to that, especially because it's more comfortable for me to get on from the right side instead of the left," says Erin. | Erin tient à effectuer tous les préparatifs elle même.

| "We put a jump standard on the other side, and she would stand between that and the mounting block. For some reason that made her feel comfortable, then we eventually took the jump standard away, and she still just stood there. And now it's just routine. I lead Letitia up to the mounting block, put the reins over her head, say 'whoa' (and she waits there), and wheel around to the other side. I hop up the steps, put my right hand down, push up, and swing my body over into the saddle. | Au début nous avons placé une barre d'obstacle de l'autre coté. Leti était "coincée" entre la barre d'obstacle et le promontoire, mais comme cela la perturbait nous avons finalement retiré cette barre, et elle reste malgré tout immobile. Maintenant c'est devenu de la routine. Je guide Letitia au promontoire, place les rênes sur son encolure demande l'arrêt ("Whoaw" et elle reste à l'arrêt) et ensuite je roule vers l'autre côté vers le promontoire, je monte dessus, appuie avec ma main pour me soulever et me déposer dans le corset de ma selle" |
| "My saddle is a modified hunt saddle, just your basic all-purpose saddle, which we decided would be light and easier for me to handle," Erin says. "My dad works at the University of Michigan and I am able to get assistance with special needs related to my disability through their Orthotics and Prosthetics Department. | "Ma selle est une selle classique anglaise de hunter, (tout comme la votre...) car nous avons pensé que ce type léger serait plus facile à manipuler pour moi" explique Erin. | They came up with the design for the saddle. I explained what I wanted
to do, and one of the doctors knew horses so he had a good idea of what
I would need as far as balance is concerned.
He came up with the design and my parents and I took it over to the leather craftsman at a local saddle shop, Lakeside Saddlery, who was able to make the modifications from a paper pattern. It looks good – it's great for showing and everything. And, the leather craftsman didn't charge us for any of that work, which was really nice of him. |
Nous avons confrontés mes souhaits avec les possibilités.
Heureusement un des médecins de cette unité était
cavalier et comprenait donc parfaitement mes attentes et la nécessité
pour moi d'un contrôle d'assiette.
C'est grâce à lui et aux spécialistes que les plans d'une selle adaptée ont été réalisés. Muni du plan mes parents ont contacté un sellier local qui a effectué gratuitement les modifications ce qui était formidable de sa part. En plus la selle est splendide tant à la vue qu'à l'usage ce qui ne gâte rien!" |
| "I had trouble at first getting the girth tightened by myself, but one day when I was at the barn alone I was determined to get it done, and I figured out a way I could do it. Leti is very good with the bridle, so it's never been a problem getting it on her. My most recent accomplishment is being able to put on polo wraps all by myself." | "Le seul vrai problème que j'ai rencontré pendant longtemps était le sanglage, mais un jour que j'étais seule à l'écurie j'ai finalement trouvé le moyen d'y parvenir sans aide. | Erin has been involved with 4-H and has competed in all-breed shows on Arabians, so she's been quite an ambassador for the breed. "I started competing in showmanship in 4-H and at open shows with Nancy's horses. When a Walk/Trot class for 13- to 19-year-olds was offered. I began to show in that class. It was a great experience because I looked just like everyone else, except that Mr. Rich would trot alongside me in the showring. I thought that was pretty incredible – that someone would do that for a kid who is not even theirs, but he's just a really cool guy. | Erin est maintenant une ambassadrice hors pair de la race arabe et participe régulièrement à des démonstrations avec ses chevaux. | "I was never afraid of being on a horse, but it took me a long time
to work up to a canter. When you watch the canter from the stands as a
spectator it seems like there is a lot that can go wrong, not just with
your own horse but with others in the ring.
I really had a huge mental block – I thought that it would be too fast or too rough, but I worked up to it, beginning again with Mr. Rich or Nancy longeing me on Letitia while I held on to the saddle. We kept working on it until I felt comfortable holding the reins. I took about six months, but I got over my fear. Now I love the canter because it actually is smooth, and it's Leti's favorite gait – and, she always takes the correct lead, which is helpful." |
"Je n'ai jamais eu peur d'être sur un cheval, mais cela m'a pris
énormément de temps pour arriver au galop. Quand vous
êtes spectateur, vous pensez à tous les types d'accidents
qui pourraient arriver au galop, pas seulement avec vous mais avec les
autres chevaux en piste.
J'avais un blocage mental! Je pensais que ce serait trop rapide, incontrôlable ou douloureux! Mais patiemment Nancy et son père m'ont longé pendant que je m'agrippais à la poignée salvatrice de ma selle... On a continué comme cela jusqu'à ce que je trouve mon équilibre pour tenir les rênes dans ma main... Cela a bien pris 6 mois... mais j'ai finalement vaincu ma peur. maintenant j'adore galoper, c'est l'allure préférée de Leti et elle prend toujours le bon pied ce qui est confortable" |
| Most of Erin's training, as well as her horses', has been entrusted
to 17-year-old Nancy.
"She amazes me," says Erin. "She learned from her own mistakes, and by watching others and reading books. I have yet to encounter a problem that she can't solve." |
La plus grande par de l'entraînement d'Erin comme de ces chevaux

| "A couple of years ago Nancy and I decided we wanted a young horse we could start under saddle, just to try it," continues Erin. "We went to look at a four-year-old Half-Arabian gelding who had not had any training, and the owner ended by saying she would just give the horse to us. We debated about it at first, but then decided to give it a try (I mean, how many times will you be offered a free horse?). He was actually pretty much a basket case, but we just decided to experiment with training methods we had read about, and things we had seen trainers do. We started with ground work, longeing, then ground driving and long-lining. The first time we put a saddle pad on him he bolted. But we just used different techniques to get him used to things, then Nancy could get on him and I'd longe her on him. | "Il y a quelques année Nancy et moi avons décidé de travailler un jeune cheval depuis le débourrage. Nous sommes aller voir un jeune cheval de 4 ans non débourré, et après discussion avec le propriétaire celui décidais de nous l'offrir. Ce n'est pas toujours les jours que cela arrive heureusement nous en avions discuter avant ! Il ne connaissait rien (le cheval) mais nous avons mis en pratique nos lectures et nos observations en commençant lentement et progressivement par le travail au sol, à la longe, aux longues rênes. Il n'a rué que lorsqu'il a reçu un tapis de selle mais cela n'a pas duré longtemps. Grâce à ces différentes techniques nous l'avons habitué à toutes sortes de situations. C'est ainsi que Nancy a commencé de le dresser en selle et que moi je le longeais.. |

Pleasure at a show in Ohio.
It was only his second show, and he's only six years old. Even though Nancy really did the training, I helped, and it was the most amazing feeling to watch Nancy ride that horse, that we had started, to that championship. It's really cool, and kind of a reassurance in a way, that we can do this." |

| Getting the horses used to Erin's wheelchair is another exercise in
patience and practice. "When I work with a new horse I'll put it in a small
paddock or pen and just go in there in my wheelchair. I don't even try
to catch the horse, I just move around, let them see it, hear it, and sniff
it out," she says. "I go really fast and really slow, just so that they
get used to being around it. Then I practice leading them, which actually
makes me the most nervous with new horses because I'm so afraid of getting
their feet caught in the wheels. I just take it slowly until they get used
to it.
The wheelchair actually makes very little noise, just a little click and slight noise of the wheels, so it's not too much of a problem. "That's another thing that I like about Arabians – they pay attention. They're always aware of my chair and are careful around it. They do get silly around it, too, once they're used to it. |

cheval, je le place dans une petite piste ou un rond de longe et je le
laisse libre d'aller et venir autour de moi et de mon fauteuil, je n'essaye
pas de l'attraper ou de l'attirer. il doit pouvoir venir sentir, renifler,
écouter et voir par lui même. Je me déplace vite ou
lentement, de façon à ce qu'il s'y habitude." explique Erin.
"Ensuite seulement je vais commencer du travail à la longe, là
je suis toujours un peu nerveuse, j'ai toujours peur du pied pris dans
les roues ..."
Le fauteuil est très silencieux, juste quelques déclic et le bruit des roues, mais je que j'apprécie chez les chevaux arabes c'est leur attention. Il me semble qu'ils sont conscients de ma chaise et qu'ils agissent en conséquence, même quand habitués ils font les fous autour de moi". |
| Several of Nancy's horses put their lips or nostrils around the joystick and make it move – one of her mares will actually put her lips around the controls and take me for a walk. I think the horses think it's their special toy. | Certains chevaux de Nancy considèrent même la chaise comme

| "Once the horse is familiar with the chair I will begin ground work - longeing, ground driving, and long-lining to get the horse used to me and my voice. I generally won't get on a horse that I really don't know. "I don't really think it's unusual that Erin rides, there are a lot of handicapped riders in other breeds, we just don't see them a lot in the Arabian industry for some reason. This year I'm also showing Letitia in sidesaddle, hunter pleasure, and showmanship in both class B and class A shows. She seems to like change, and doing different things. I am thinking about working on trail riding this fall, and then possibly going on a limited distance ride next year, maybe 15 to 25 miles. | For Erin the showring has become a personal testing ground and a reflection of an uncommon harmony between rider and horse. "How many other sports are there that I can compete in and not really be at a disadvantage? I mean, I basically look the same as the other riders – sometimes when I'm in the showring people won't even notice that I don't have legs. I know I probably will not ever have the kind of relationship that I have with Leti with any other horse. I really put my trust in her and everything is comfortable with her. In a way, I think we were meant to find each other because she's so good with me. She's truly special. This is a real partner sport, and Letitia will usually cover for me if anything does go wrong – she makes sure I'm not at a disadvantage." | Pour Erin la piste est devenue un lieu d'intégration et d'harmonie avec ses chevaux. Car dit-elle est il un seul autre endroit ou mon physique ne joue pas contre moi ? alors que quand je suis en selle, il arrive fréquemment que d'autres cavaliers ne remarquent pas directement mon handicap physique. Il est très possible que je n'aurai plus jamais le même type de relation avec un autre cheval car la relation de confiance avec Leti est très forte. Je pense que nous étions destinées à nous rencontrer, elle est vraiment spéciale, elle rend la confiance que je lui donne et est mon partenaire sportif à part entière. Elle est prête à me soutenir si un incident survient, elle fera tout ce qu'elle peut pour pallier et faire face au problème pour ma sécurité. |
| This fall 2000 Erin will begin studies at Michigan State University, where she and Nancy will room together.
